Why Earth Day Matters to People with Asthma: It’s the Air We Breathe
Repost from Healthline
Each year on April 22, Earth Day acts as an invitation to reconnect with nature. Many people choose to spend the day exploring the great outdoors, planting a tree, or organizing a trash pickup to help take care of their community.
The first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970 to raise awareness about the ways that fossil fuels were polluting our air and water. Led by two senators, Americans gathered to protest the impacts of oil spills, industrial waste, and traffic pollution on the environment — and, in turn, their own health.
The attention the first Earth Day brought to these issues resulted in the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and spurred legislation that still protects communities today.

School-Based Asthma, Allergy & Anaphylaxis Management Program
The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI) has created a new central resource known as the School-Based Asthma, Allergy & Anaphylaxis Management Program (SA3MPRO™) to help students with asthma and allergies, as well as their families, manage their conditions while at school. The School-Based Allergies and Asthma Management Program Act (H.R. 2468) became law in January 2021, requiring individual action plans and coordinated support for students with allergies and asthma.
SA3MPRO encourages a “circle of support,” centering the child within a communication network that includes families, clinicians and school nurses. Each child should have an asthma action plan—a key part of coordinating asthma care—and health care providers must educate the family, child and school nurse about the need for the plan in school. SA3MPRO emphasizes the importance of accessible, bidirectional and simple communication among all members of the circle of support for the health of the child.
The SA3MPRO toolkit offers detailed guidance for schools, clinicians and families, as well as many sample forms.
