The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the first generic version of the discontinued asthma inhaler Flovent HFA. The fluticasone propionate product is an inhaled corticosteroid that reduces inflammation in the lungs and can be used as a maintenance treatment of asthma in patients 4 years and older. Asthma affects about 4.6 million U.S. children, according to the FDA. While there is a generic version of Flovent HFA on the market, it is from the same company that made the name brand drug. The FDA considers the new product to be the first true generic because it is from another company.
