How to implement the Stock Inhaler for Schools Program
To successfully implement the Stock Inhaler for Schools Program at your school, please follow these steps:
- Identify a Program Lead for your school/schools or district. This is usually the Director of Health Services or a lead licensed nurse. However, for smaller schools without a lead licensed nurse, this should be an individual who will take responsibility with leading program implementation at their school/schools.
- Obtain permission from your school administration. This is usually a district-level person or the school principal (Required by R7-2-810).
- Designate at least two school staff to complete the mandatory web-based training curriculum and administer the stock albuterol inhaler to individuals when necessary. This online training should be completed annually (Required by HB 2208).
- Register your school/schools in the appropriate data management system (either the Stock Inhaler Portal for schools located in Pima County or the School Surveillance Medication Program for all other schools located outside of Pima County).
- Work with the Program Lead to obtain program supplies for your school. All supplies must be requested by the Program Lead using the data reporting system.
By following these steps, you can ensure effective and safe implementation of the Stock Inhaler for Schools Program at your school.
Responsibilities of the Program Lead
- Oversee the implementation of the Stock Inhaler for Schools Program at your school/schools.
- Serve as the primary contact between your school/schools and program staff including the county health departments.
- Ensure a minimum of (2) on-site school staff have completed the mandatory web-based training curriculum “Stock Albuterol Inhaler Training for School Personnel” at each participating school (annually).
- Register each participating school in the appropriate data management system (either the Stock Inhaler Portal for schools located in Pima County or the School Surveillance Medication Program for all other schools located outside of Pima County).
- Upload proof of training completion for each trained staff to the appropriate data management system. A minimum of (2) onsite staff must be trained at each school.
- Request a Standing Medical Order for each participating school using the appropriate data reporting system or provide proof of a current standing medical order from your school’s medical consultant.
- Request program supplies for each participating school using the appropriate data management system.
- Supervise personnel changes throughout the school year. Program Leads will be responsible for ensuring changes to personnel are documented into the appropriate data management system (i.e., uploading proof of training completion for new staff).

(1) 200-dose or 60-dose albuterol sulfate metered dose inhaler
Disposable supply of (10) Thayer LiteAire® valved-holding chambers (spacers)
