Frequently Asked Questions about the Stock Inhaler for Schools Program
I am a nurse and I want to start the Stock Inhaler for Schools Program at my school. How do I get started?
Email stockinhaler@arizona.edu and a team member will follow-up with you.
Can I use the stock inhaler to pre-treat students before P.E?
The stock albuterol inhaler should not be used on students who wish to pre-treat before physical activity.
What if I think the student needs only 2 puffs?
The Stock Albuterol Inhaler Protocol & Action Plan should be strictly followed.
Do we lock up the stock inhaler?
The stock albuterol inhaler should be kept in a safe, but unlocked place. Do not lock this medication as it may prevent its use during a respiratory emergency.
Can I use the stock inhaler on a student who doesn’t have asthma?
The stock albuterol inhaler can be used on both students with previously known asthma and unknown asthma. Please contact the student's legal guardian prior to use; however, you do not need to obtain prior permission if you are unable to reach the parent. You will follow-up with the parent via, e-mail, phone or a letter.
I called the parents first and they told me 2 puffs only.
What do I do?
When parents request that you deviate from the specified
protocol, please document this deviation carefully in the
"comments" or "notes" section of the required incident
report form.
Can I use the inhaler on adult?
Yes. The inhaler can be used on any person experiencing
respiratory distress. In adults, it is important to verify
the individual has known asthma and does not have
access to their personal rescue inhaler.
